Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling—keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017,we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.
Position Summary The International Export Coordinator executes Redwood Materials’ outbound international shipments end-to-end, from booking through delivery to the foreign consignee. This role owns the day-to-day mechanics of ocean export from Redwood’s U.S. facilities at the Battery Materials Campus (BMC) to customers across Asia and Europe—including booking, the complete export document set, and the Electronic Export Information (EEI) filing behind every shipment. Because Redwood exports battery materials and end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, the position works where dangerous goods rules, transboundary waste controls, and destination-country import requirements intersect. The Coordinator is the operating link between Redwood’s plants, its freight forwarders, customs brokers, and international customers, and is accountable for shipments leaving on the booked vessel with audit-ready documentation.
Responsibilities
- Book and manage ocean export shipments with freight forwarders and non-vessel-operating common carriers (NVOCCs)—rate and space confirmation, drayage, container release, port cut-offs, and vessel schedules—from U.S. origins to destination ports across Asia and Europe
- Prepare, verify, and distribute the complete export document set for every shipment: Shipper’s Letter of Instruction (SLI), commercial and pro forma invoices, certificate of origin, packing list, ISPM-15 declaration, dangerous goods declaration, and house bill of lading
- File Electronic Export Information (EEI) in Automated Export System (AES) and AESDirect accurately and within Foreign Trade Regulations (FTR) timelines, resolve fatal errors and compliance alerts, and maintain the correct U.S. Principal Party in Interest (USPPI) and filer-of-record determination on routed and standard export transactions
- Screen consignees, notify parties, end users, and banks against denied and restricted party lists before booking, and escalate potential matches, prohibited end-use indicators, and Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) "Know Your Customer" red flags to Trade Compliance
- Apply and verify Schedule B and Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification for exported materials, and prepare origin documentation supporting preferential claims, including United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and Korea–U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) certificates
- Prepare dangerous goods documentation for lithium battery and battery-material shipments (UN3480, UN3090, UN3496, and related Class 9 entries), confirming packaging, marking, labeling, and carrier-specific Dangerous Goods (DG) acceptance requirements with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)
- Coordinate waste-classified and controlled movements—Basel Convention and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) notification and consent, European Union Waste Shipment Regulation (EU WSR) procedures, and destination-country permits or import bans—with Trade Compliance and the receiving customer before cargo is tendered
- Apply the correct Incoterms 2020 rule per Redwood’s Outbound and Risk Transfer Incoterms matrices, confirming cost and risk transfer, insurance, and payment terms with Commercial and Finance prior to booking
- Track shipments through delivery and manage exceptions—roll-overs, port congestion, dangerous goods holds, documentation discrepancies, demurrage, and detention—communicating status and recovery plans to internal stakeholders and customers
- Maintain export records in accordance with Export Administration Regulations (EAR) recordkeeping requirements (15 CFR 762), 19 CFR 163, and Redwood standard operating procedures (SOPs), including Outbound Trade Compliance and Denied Party Screening, keeping every shipment file complete and audit-ready
- Review forwarder and carrier invoices against quoted rates and booking terms, identifying duplicate billing, unsupported accessorials, and uninvoiced shipments, and reconcile findings with the Transportation Analyst
- Maintain export shipment data in the Transportation Management System (TMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, producing recurring reporting on export volume, lane cost, transit performance, and documentation accuracy
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, international business, logistics, or a related field preferred but not required (equivalent relevant experience considered in lieu of a degree)
- 1+ years of hands-on international export, freight forwarding, or customs experience, including direct preparation of ocean export documentation
- Working knowledge of Foreign Trade Regulations (15 CFR 30) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR), with demonstrated experience filing Electronic Export Information (EEI) in Automated Export System (AES) or AESDirect
- Familiarity with Schedule B and Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification, certificates of origin, and free trade agreement documentation
- Working knowledge of Incoterms 2020 and ocean transport documentation, including booking confirmations, house and master bills of lading, and arrival notices
- International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) certification, or the ability to obtain it within six months of hire; experience with Class 9 lithium battery shipping requirements strongly preferred
- Awareness of Basel Convention, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Decision C(2001)107, and European Union Waste Shipment Regulation (EU WSR) controls on transboundary movements of recyclable and end-of-life material preferred
- Experience managing freight forwarders, customs brokers, and non-vessel-operating common carriers (NVOCCs), with the confidence to hold third parties to documented service and compliance standards
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills plus working experience in Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, with the ability to build and maintain shipment, cost, and performance reporting independently
- Exceptional attention to detail and recordkeeping discipline
- Strong written and verbal communication skills across international time zones
- Ability to work independently, prioritize against competing vessel cut-offs, and escalate early when a shipment is at risk
